Google makes about 500 changes to its algorithm each year. This means it can be harder for businesses to keep up with SEO changes and figuring out how to rank their business on Google's search engine.

Google updates its algorithm all the time, but sometimes they have a core update, which is a bit more important.

Google's most recent core update in January of 2020 is an example of another change. But it's just not any update, it's a huge core update that can affect your business.

Here's what you need to know about Google's most recent core update in January of 2020.

Google Updates Search Algorithm

This newest update changes the way businesses are ranked and how Google sees organic posts and content.

A blog post by Google best summarizes the changes. Google says the core update is like a reranking of all-time movies. So, while you have had Good Fellas in the top 5 in recent years, it may not be a lot lower on the all-time movie list

Google is reorganizing its list of who is on the top of search ranking. They have changed what's valuable and put other businesses on the top of the search rankings. They've essentially changed the list.

You have to put more attention to organic keywords and placing valuable original content on your website. You can see more about keyword focus on our blog.

The movie list, which is Google's example, is Google's way of saying that this list will constantly be changed. They want to show that there are more deserving websites that need more attention beyond sites that have always been around.

What Can You Do?

It's important to look at your website's traffic in days following the update. You don't know if traffic will drop off or you will have an increase in traffic.

Some questions that Google has provided for anyone looking to improve traffic to their site. These questions include, does the content provide original information, reporting, research or analysis?

Another question posted by Google to help businesses does the content provide substantial, complete, and comprehensive topic?

These are some of the questions that Google asks to help you create content. Google is not trying to trick you with their core update, but they just want you to create more original content, which can only improve your website ranking.

What Can Your Business Do?

Your business has to learn to adapt to Google updates because these updates happen a lot and they are critical to driving in more traffic to your business website.

You have to figure out what strategies to employ. You may need to reassess your SEO, the content you are posting, or how you are answering questions from your core audience.

But don't do anything yet. You need to see how your website ranks after Google's core update. You need to see how your business was reassessed.
