So much of digital marketing is centered around social media.

When we discuss the role of social media in digital marketing, it's important to acknowledge how much things have changed over the last 15 years. What seemed like a relatively innocent way for disparate people to keep in touch in its infancy has now turned into one of the most important marketing tools that we have.

Social media is going to keep changing. Today, we're going to talk about the future of social media and what digital marketers need to know in order to stay ahead of the curve.

Knowing a few social media marketing tricks is one thing, but being able to predict change and adapt alongside these platforms is what can bring your brand and business to a completely new level.

1. Growth of Influence

When most people think of influencer marketing, they probably picture an Instagram model or some second-rate celebrity promoting a product on social media. There's a lot more to it than that.

As we move forward into 2020, more and more small businesses are using influencer marketing to build their brands. It's becoming the go-to way to connect brands and businesses with the right followers. Expect this trend to continue to grow in the future as we get better and better at connecting with one another.

2. Live Video

We already know how important video is in digital marketing. What is showing the most growth for social media marketing, however, is the use of live video to help build your brand and give your followers a more personal look at what you do.

People are 3 times more likely to engage with a live video than a pre-recorded one. More digital marketing experts are going to allocate their video production resources into building followership to watch live videos instead of dumping funds into producing high-quality pre-recorded ones.

3. Pushing Sales with Social Media

Social media is becoming a more important part of the actual selling of products. In years past, social media has always been crucial for brand building and customer engagement, but less obvious were its effects on sales numbers

Now, with things like shoppable posts, we're seeing a direct correlation between engagement on posts and sales figures. As we become more sophisticated with social media, we're able to better figure out what our followers want to see and where they want to see it.

4. New Platforms Emerge

There have been so many failed social media platforms that were touted to be the next big thing only to fade away in a few months, wasting many a digital marketer's time and money. This has made many of us quite cynical about newer platforms.

As we look at the recent past to figure out the future, it's becoming clear that people are growing restless with the bigger platforms. We're sure to see more new platforms emerge, and some of those will be viable options for social media marketers.

Even something as simple as TikTok has taken the world by storm, so it's more important than ever for digital marketers to keep their ears to the ground for the next TikTok, Snapchat, and Vero.

The Future of Social Media

The future of social media isn't easy to predict. For digital marketers, it always feels like you're chasing the white rabbit. If you're too slow to analyze trends, something will change slightly, and you'll be back to square one.

What makes it so frustrating is also what makes it so exciting. You've got to take chances when it comes to social media marketing. The digital marketers that are able to mix great research with creativity are the ones that are most likely to succeed.
