If you're unfamiliar with SEO or WordPress, then you probably don't know what a focus keyword is.

A focus keyword helps you optimize your website so that you get, not just more visitors, but more of the right visitors. They do this by helping you assess your on-page SEO so you can improve it and attract more new customers.

Finding the perfect focus keyword isn't as easy as it sounds. In this post, we're going to define what exactly makes a focus keyword and how many you should use to effectively improve your SEO efforts.

Using keywords is an essential part of digital marketing and SEO, but if you overstuff your content with keywords, you'll achieve the opposite effect. Follow our guide and you'll be using keywords the right way.

What Is a Focus Keyword?

Your focus keyword is the word or phrase that you want to be associated with your page, as far as search terms go. When used correctly, someone will type that phrase into Google and they'll be directed to your page.

Using the Yoast plugin on WordPress, you can use the "focus keyword" input to figure out how effective your on-page SEO is. It's essentially a brief summary of what someone would find on your landing page, unlike general keywords, which are the terms you'll use directly in the content.

Choosing a Focus Keyword

One of the biggest mistakes that most bloggers and website administrators make is trying to find their focus keyword after they've published their content. It's not something that you can insert effectively after the fact.

Instead, do some keyword research and make an informed decision on a focus keyword, then create your content with it in mind. There are many tools available online that can help you find relevant keywords and give you stats that tell you how searchable the terms are.

With this information, you'll be able to sort the keywords based on the search volume and overall SEO difficulty (how difficult it is to rank with that keyword, based on other sites' use of it). An ideal focus keyword would have low difficulty and high search volume.

Number of Keywords

You should keep your focus on only a couple of focus keyword at a time, so you can maximize the searchability of your landing page. If you go with only one keyword, you might run into more competition and if you use too many, then you'll run the risk of losing a grip on the clarity of your content.

Try using two or three keywords that are highly representative of your output. If you have more than one stream of visitors coming in from the different focus keywords, then you'll move up the SERP more quickly.

Maintain Your Focus As Well

Your focus keyword is important for how to create content that people will find, but it shouldn't be the only thing guiding you. You need to be able to create engaging and informative content and just use the focus keyword(s) as a way to get people on to your page.

Keywords are a crucial part of digital marketing, but this is a multi-faceted field and you'll need to consider more than just keywords to get ahead. Contact us at Addison Voice to get help with your keywords and SEO.
