The businesses that are crushing it on social media seem to have one thing in common–a high engagement rate.

Sure, having a large number of followers is also a good idea. However, many of the social media influencers out there grabbing the attention of affiliate companies aren't the ones with millions of followers.

Instead, influencers with as little as 5,000 followers and extremely impressive engagement rates have become a commodity.

Your social media engagement strategy should focus around influencing people, regardless of if you're an influencer or a business owner. You want people to comment, share, and message you, not just hit a "heart" or "like" button as they scroll through their feed and instantly forget about it.

Keep reading to find out how to improve your engagement.

Social Media Engagement Strategy Tips

The most important thing to remember about social media is that it is "social." People follow you because they want to not because they have to. You need to make sure you give people a reason to follow you, and more importantly, engage with you.

1. Engage Back

One of the best social media engagement strategy tips is being responsive to your followers. Like or comment back to every single person who comments on your post. Answer questions, express gratitude for compliments, even respond to trolls.

Never go longer than 24 hours before responding to a message or email. It's also a good idea to create posts that encourage engagement, such as art contests, raffles, captioning contests, etc. Keep it fun.

2. Post About Your Topic, Not Just Your Brand

Next, while you're ultimately on social media for your own benefit, you also need to remember that people won't respond well if you don't do anything but push your product or services.

Make sure you're posting relevant and interesting content about your topic, not just your brand. Keep people apprised of all the updates and trends going on in your industry. You can then use it to engage with your followers by asking them what they would like to see from you.

3. Host Live Videos

Another great social media engagement strategy is doing live videos on Facebook. This holds multiple benefits

First, it shows you're human and people feel more connected with someone when they're filming live. Second, it gives people an opportunity to ask you questions and receive answers in real-time through your voice rather than messages.

4. Post Other People's Relevant Content

While you're posting content about your topic, make sure you pull in other resources. Of course, you want to post from your own blog to keep yourself considered an authority in your field. However, you should never pass on the opportunity to post engaging content simply because it isn't yours.

Just be careful not to promote competing websites or businesses.

5. Use Multiple Forms of Media

A staple of your social media engagement strategy should be learning how to use multiple forms of media. This includes pictures, videos, memes, infographics, charts, etc.

The more interesting you can keep your page, the more followers you'll gain and the more people will engage with you.

6. Be Real

Finally, in order for your social media engagement strategy to work, you need to be genuine. So much of what we do in our day to day lives is digital; people crave connection.

When you're posting, be funny, be passionate, be compassionate, but most of all, be real.
